Favourite cult characters
Short runs and strange histories.
Some characters are irresistible because their publishing history is compact, unusual or wonderfully odd. The original Marvel series of The Human Fly ran for 19 issues, while Warlock, Metal Men, Deathlok, Darkhawk and Machine Man reward the pleasure of following a distinctive character beyond a single cover.
Machine Man emerged from Jack Kirby's 2001: A Space Odyssey comics before receiving his own series. Alien and Predator books offer similarly satisfying short runs, while selected Spawn and Thor issues earn their place one memorable story or cover at a time.
The common thread is specificity: a finite run, a character with an unusual history, a cover that lands immediately, or a book that adds something distinct to the collection.
